.:casper:.

Casper Boone.

His parents have been waiting for him for a very long time. Just as the Lord told Abraham that he and Sarah were to have a son, Jennifer & Chris knew of their calling to be parents. And then waited. And waited. And waited.

Hannah waited for so many years for Samuel who became one of the wisest, most upright, kind, generous, and graceful prophets in history. May Casper be as Samuel whose mother waited and prayed for him long and hard.

.:christopher j blackerby:.

I took photos of "Flyin' West", a show in which Chris was in, several months ago. Brian and I both were blown away by his acting ability. He commanded both your attention and respect when he was on the stage. Dr. Ruffin, the director, remarked to me in the intermission the night I was taking photos that Chris was in his final year but had not discovered acting until very shortly prior to the show but was thinking about switching the focus of his whole life. Chris is one of those rare gems that you watch onstage and believe that not only could he make a career out of acting, but he probably should. After I took Brian to see it later that week we spent a lot of our time afterwards raving about Chris's performance. So when I received an e-mail a short time later asking if it was possible to do headshots for him as he was in desperate need of them, I was stoked.

Today, we finally got together. To our surprise, we discovered that not only is Chris a very very talented actor but he also has one of the gentlest, humblest hearts you will ever encounter. It was refreshing to spend time with him this afternoon as we learned more. If anyone reading this has any connections to the film industry and need a humble, hardworking, great actor I hear that Chris may be looking for a job in a few weeks...

Chris, it was an absolute honor. Thanks for your flexibility and patience!

.:my day job:.

So some of you may know that I am an architectural photographer by day and an everything else photographer by night & weekend (wedding, portraits, events, etc.). Though buildings may not seem nearly as exciting as people (and trust me, they often aren't) on occasion I come across a property that just stuns me. I get to travel around (when I'm not part of the marketing department in the wintery times) and take shots of interiors & exteriors of affordable housing complexes. But do not assume that they are slums. No sirree, these are beautiful properties that *I* would LOVE to live in (but don't qualify). They often fix up old historic properties that are abandoned. I visited one such property in on Friday. It was an abandoned school that has now been restored and turned into a beautiful senior center opening next week.

How would you like to live in a building whose common space looks like this? Absolutely stunning.

.:resting:.

So these past few days have been jam-packed with photos. And I mean it. Friday started out my day with a photoshoot of a beautifully landscaped backyard for one of my company's gorgeous new senior complexes in Columbia and ended with a fun wedding rehearsal for Allison & Alan in Jefferson City. Yesterday we made it to Jeff at 11 to start shooting their wedding day. Got some A-MAZING photos, especially at the capitol building afterwards. We prayed for no rain and voila, no rain so the cloudy atmosphere couldn't have produced a better lighting source for the wedding party photos. To top the day off we headed back to Columbia to photograph Brad Cunningham and a young violinist at the Artisan and got some pretty wicked shots and finally called it a day to return to our humble abode close to 11:00 p.m.

I can't wait to see the photos!

But it's Sunday and we are resting because it is the Lord's day. Did anyone ever mention that resting was hard? It takes all of my self-control sometimes on our day of rest for me not to do any work. But it's good for me. = )

So maybe I'll get to post some of the photos tomorrow. Yay! Until then, I'm resting. (Or rather, trying to.)

.:easter:.

My first Easter from as long as I can remember where I didn't go to church! Brian was really sick so I wasn't feeling super artsy, but here are a few from Easter:

These lips were literally frozen on Lily for the first full minute she got outside to hunt for eggs!

Lily's sister, Emma, looking a little devious.

My mom wanted a family photo. I set it on auto timer and we took 3 frames--one of which was this one. Everyone else knew Chris was messing up the photo but there I am, still determined to look the camera in the eye...

I finally got to snap a few photos of my dear little sister and her hubby, Christopher. My grandmother's hay loft in her barn does make for some beautiful, diffused lighting scenarios. I tried adding a little external flash but it just didn't do them justice so I scrapped it. The natural light just wrapped around them so much better!

.:a mother's joy:.

On my second pass through of little Jay's birthday pictures I discovered this one. How did I miss it the first round? I love capturing emotions. Joy is my favorite.

.:jaylin turns one:.

I normally LOVE black & white for my photos (especially if it's an event to remember) but this birthday party was so colorful and bright there was no way I could turn these black & white--it hid too much of the joy of the day! Jaylin turned one and Misty made the most awesomest cake ever known to man (seriously, it even tasted as excellent as it looked!) Jaylin has got to be the most loved little one-year-old this world has ever seen, no joke. And what a doll, to boot!

.:julie & wale:.

Today was wonderful. John, Brian and I met up in the black box theatre to try out lighting scenarios. I feel like I have learned so much since our last time in November! It feels surreal to think how far I've come at times and how little I knew before. One of the things that helped today is that we actually had a few volunteer models. I sometimes feel bad for the poor people who are guinea pigs for our lighting setups as, since we are still learning, there can often be a lot of tweaking and moving lights and checking settings, etc. But today before everyone got there we got a few setups done and played with.

Julie, a wonderful gal from my work showed up as a volunteer model and then a friend of mine from theatre also came, Wale Aliyu. Julie needed a headshot for an upcoming license she's going to get for our company and since she's so energetic and fun I invited her to come along so we could use her as a model. Wale has actually done some modeling prior to today and is so great to work with! It was so fun, every time I clicked, he moved and did something different. Maybe some people are meant to be models. I don't think I am!

I think my favorite shot has to be a tie between the first one posted above and then the second one of Julie below. Enjoy!

I don't know why I like this one above so much. It's a candid but something about it feels... surreal to me. You can see the umbrella on the left, unlit, the vague outline of someone in the foreground talking to someone else, and then the model, alone taking a breather but yet caught by light.

She's just so beautiful!

John looking somber, as he seems to do when the camera is on him. I gave him some special "effects". It's a very John photo. 2 lights, people!

And then, finally, me. Brian & John put together a setup to replicate one of a photo I'd fallen in love with. The girl was so serious, staring straight at the camera. She was in all black and her hair was a rim of angelic white light. Rather than edgy, I just look angry. Guess modeling isn't in my future!
What a fun day! (We missed you, Mike!)

.:mike's silly lens:.

On the rare occasion that I feel pooped after a long day of marketing/photoediting/general administrative tasks I do all day at the office, it's difficult to get myself motivated to do another 5 hours of photowork at home. So I give myself incentives.

Tonight it involves Mike. Mike Tsai to be exact and his ridiculous love for his ridiculous lens (mine beats the pants off yours, by the way, Mike). Photos I haven't edited from our last Columbia meetup in November. So I'm posting 2 versions of the same photo. Mike can be the judge of his favorite. = )
